Guide to Installing a Silt Fence

Step 1: Site Assessment

Before installation, assess the site to determine the optimal placement for your silt fence to intercept and treat runoff most effectively. Consider the overall topography and the direction of prevailing stormwater flow.

Step 2: Trench Preparation

Excavate a trench approximately 6 inches deep along the planned silt fence line. This depth ensures that the bottom of the silt fence is sufficiently buried to prevent water from undermining the barrier.

Step 3: Installing the Fabric

Unroll the silt fence fabric along the trench line. Ensure the fabric extends into the trench. The fabric should have a minimum of six inches buried to effectively anchor the fence and handle the hydrostatic pressure from water and sediment buildup.

Step 4: Post Placement and Spacing

Securely attach the posts to the fence fabric before placing them into the ground. For standard conditions, posts should be spaced 8-10 feet apart. In areas prone to heavy water flow or when using heavy-duty fabric, reduce the spacing to 5-6 feet to provide additional support and resilience.

Step 5: Backfilling the Trench

Once the fabric is attached to the posts and the posts are properly aligned, backfill the trench, packing the soil firmly around the base of the fabric and posts. This step is crucial to prevent any gaps where water could potentially bypass the fabric.

Step 6: Double Fencing for Enhanced Protection

For enhanced sediment control, particularly in larger or more vulnerable construction sites, install a secondary line of silt fencing. Place this secondary fence about three feet behind the primary fence, creating a two-tiered barrier system that offers additional filtration and protection.

Step 7: Regular Maintenance

Inspect the silt fence after each rainfall and regularly during the construction project. Check for signs of damage, sediment accumulation, or water bypassing the fence. Prompt maintenance is essential to ensure the continued effectiveness of the silt fence.
